AI adoption is advancing across UK financial services, but recent FCA messaging underlines that innovation must be accompanied by sound controls, good information and fair customer outcomes. The regulator has highlighted the importance of proportionate risk management, management information and governance, while the Bank of England-led sector resilience exercise focused on disruption to global cloud services.
For mortgage and financial-advice firms, the immediate opportunity is operational: triaging enquiries, summarising fact-finds, identifying remortgage opportunities and supporting internal quality assurance. The central risk is allowing unverified outputs, biased language or inaccurate product information into client-facing advice. A separate study highlighted concerns that AI writing tools can affect perceptions of professionalism differently, including by gender.
Firms should keep a human accountable for advice, approval and customer communications; test outputs for bias and accuracy; maintain clear audit trails; and have contingency plans for cloud or supplier outages. AI can improve efficiency, but Consumer Duty principles still require advisers to demonstrate that clients receive understandable communications and suitable outcomes.
