Green Finance Enters the Mainstream

The Government has launched the Warm Homes Loan Scheme, offering no- and low-interest finance for household energy-efficiency measures, with repayment terms of up to 30 years in some cases. Tandem Bank is among the first lenders approved to support the scheme, covering measures including solar panels and air-source heat pumps.

This creates a useful advice conversation beyond the initial mortgage: clients may need to compare retrofit finance with additional borrowing, secured loans, savings or a remortgage. Advisers should assess total borrowing cost, property-specific eligibility, installation quotes, expected energy savings and whether the chosen finance remains affordable under realistic household budgets. Green improvements may also become more relevant to property value, insurance and future lending decisions.
